Remember to perfect the famous outback wave to passing drivers. There are many versions, so take your pick. Some drivers favour a wave of the hand, others like raising a lazy finger or two. Some of the most enthusiastic travellers say ‘g’day’ with a lift of their bush hats.

For the fast way in and out, you can fly direct every day to and from Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne (via Mildura) or jump on the weekly Outback Explorer XPT and enjoy an amazing and relaxing journey along the great train routes. 

Self-Drive

Sydney 1,134 km - The most direct route is through the Blue Mountains to Mudgee, Dubbo, Nyngan, Cobar, Wilcannia through to Broken Hill.

Drive Time: Approximately 13 hours.

Melbourne 837 km - Take the Calder highway to Mildura, then continue through to Wentworth and then Broken Hill.

Drive Time: Approximately 9 hours.

Adelaide 517 km - Follow the M2 onto the Barrier Highway (A32) which will take you through Gawler, Burra, Yunta and Broken Hill.

Drive Time: Approximately 6 hours.
