These waste dumps are the remains the mining of low grade ‘remnant ore’ from the open cut operations of Minerals, Mining and Metallurgy Ltd (MMM).
MMM acquired Broken Hill South’s interests in 1972 and operated open pits that extended into Blocks 11 and 13 between 1976 and 1991.
The Kintore pit extended across Blocks 9, 10 and 11; the Blackwood pit was on the old British Mine, and there was a smaller pit in Block 14.
MMM ceased open pit mining at Broken Hill in 1991. and closed its operations in March 1992.
