The South Australian hotel, established in 1888, was the first hotel to open in the Railwaytown area of Broken Hill.
It was followed by the Gasworks, the Hillside, and the Freiberg. The South Australian was also the last of the original Railwaytown hotels to close. The Rising Sun Hotel is the now only licenced hotel servicing the residents of Railwaytown. The South Australian Hotel closed in September 2013.
